There are three levels of EV charging for Porsche: Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. The higher the level of charging, the faster the charge process as more power is delivered to the vehicle. Only the first two levels can be used to charge your Porsche Taycan at home.
Best Level 2 chargers for Porsche Taycan (Hardwired)
- Nov 21, 2024 1:15 AM
Level 1 or “charging by plugging into an ordinary wall outlet” typically requires a cord with a standard (often referred to as “Type 1” in Europe) J1772 connector (or simply “J”), which is also used for electric cooktops. Back in 2010, most new EVs sold in North America were shipped with this onboard; however now many automakers include only a stubby pigtail adapter that can be hard-wired into your home electrical system (thereby avoiding having to pay for installation).

Level 2 charging stations require 240 volts and, unless you have a dedicated circuit already installed in your garage, will require the services of an electrician to install a new outlet and/or breaker. These stations can deliver from 3.3 to 20 kW of power, which can charge the Porsche Taycan up to 80% in 3-4 hours.

Now that you know the basics, what do you need to consider when choosing a charging station for your home?
#1 Power. One of the most important factors to consider is the power requirements of your electric vehicle. Not all chargers are created equal and some can deliver more power than others. If you have a newer, high-power EV, it’s important to make sure you have a charger that can match its needs. Many Level 2 chargers offer multiple power levels, so be sure to choose one that can provide enough juice for your Porsche.
#2 Speed. How important is speed to you? Some people don’t mind waiting a few hours to recharge their vehicles, but others want a faster charge. If you have multiple cars in your household it’s good to keep this in mind too.
#3 Placement. Where are you going to mount the charger? You should place it where it is easily accessible and convenient for you to use. Many people choose garage locations because they are close to the Porsche Taycan, but if you don’t have an attached garage consider installing one near your parking area or driveway.
Installation
EV Adept has done some research on charging station installation cost and found that it typically ranges from $700-$1,500 depending on what you need installed (including the charger itself). Also be sure to check with your local building codes as there may be specific requirements before a charger can be installed. You can contact us and get professional advice on EV installation.
When shopping for a charger consider the location you will eventually mount it and how much power your Porsche Taycan needs in order to determine if Level 2 or Level 3 is best for you. Look at what types of power connections are available on your EV and match that up with the charging station specs. And remember, even if your car doesn’t have fast chargers today, there may be options in the future—so choose a charger that will accommodate higher speeds when they become available.
How many amps do you need for a Taycan home charger?
When looking for an EV charger for Porsche, you need to find one that has the right amount of amps for your car. Most cars require at least 32 amps of charging capability, but 50 amps is best. Chargers with more than 50 amps can be expensive, though, so make sure your car can handle that much power before spending the extra money.
Once you’ve determined how many amps your car needs, it’s time to choose a charger. There are a few things you should keep in mind when selecting a charger:
- Portability: If you plan on moving your charger around often, make sure it’s lightweight and easy to transport.
- Efficiency: Look for a charger that’s Energy Star certified for maximum efficiency.
- Compatibility: Make sure the charger you select is compatible with your car and your electrical system.
Once you’ve chosen a charger, it’s time to install it. Installation can be tricky, so it’s best to leave it to a professional. If you’re comfortable doing it yourself, though, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- The location of your charger is important. It should be in a spot where the cord will reach the car without stretching or being too close to traffic.
- Check your home’s electrical wiring to make sure it can handle the load of a car charger. If not, you may need to have an electrician update your before installing the charger.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to avoid any safety hazards.
Can I use a Tesla wall connector to charge a Porsche Taycan?
Yes. It’s possible with a Tesla-to-J1772 adapter. This provides approximately 6-8 miles of range per hour of charge, depending on the car. Porsche’s Mobile Chargers are also available for purchase and offer fast charging capabilities that give you up to 10 hours or 8.5 hours respectively when recharging their Taycan models from zero battery life in comparison to the average time it takes using a typical household outlet at home; this could be anywhere between 12-18 hours if not more! If you’re looking into purchasing an electric vehicle (EV) like the Porsche Taycan or Taycan S, make sure you have access to these
Once your Porsche Taycan home charger is installed, you’re ready to start charging your electric car. Enjoy the convenience and environmental benefits of driving electric.
Porsche Taycan Charging Specs and Guide
This guide will cover charging specs for the Porsche Taycan. The GTS, Turbo, and Turbo S all have larger batteries. The GTS is the third largest battery in an electric car, behind the 100kWh battery of the Tesla Model S and 108kWh battery of the Mercedes EQS. The GTS has the fastest charging speed of any battery in an electric car, and can go up to 313 miles before recharging.
Performance Battery Plus
The performance battery of a Porsche Taycan is its biggest selling point, and it’s worth noting that the car’s weight is downright shocking – it’s 76 kilograms lighter than the standard model. In addition to a reduced weight, the Taycan’s range is significantly longer than its traditional counterparts. Here, we’ll take a look at the range and charging specs of a Performance Battery Plus Taycan, along with a guide to this battery’s unique qualities.
The Performance Battery Plus Porsche Taycan has a larger, 93.4-kilowatt-hour battery than its Tesla counterpart. The car also features an optional Premium Package that includes adaptive cruise control. The EPA’s official range rating is 225 miles, and its efficiency rating is 2.11 miles/kWh. That means the Taycan beats the Model 3 on highways. Despite its higher cost, it has a longer range than its competitor.
Plug-in charging stations
With a 350 kW DC fast charger you can recharge your Porsche Taycan from 5% to 80% in as little as 22.5 minutes. The system offers 128 charging stations at 32 locations, most of which are located along major highways or well-traveled metro areas. Whether you’re traveling to the beach, the city or the mountains, there’s a station nearby.
The charging infrastructure of the Porsche Taycan includes the CCS charging standard, which consists of a single, combined AC-DC inlet port. The inlet features an integrated Type-2 connector, which is used for charging at home and at public AC points. The inlet is divided into two sections – the upper section carries high power during rapid DC charging. The inlet is located in the front door and flank, behind the off-side front wheel.
Public charging calculator
If you are considering purchasing a Porsche Taycan, you may wonder how much it will cost to charge your car. With a Porsche Taycan charging cost calculator, you can find out the costs involved in charging your car and see how much you will save in the long run. You can input the amount of battery charge you want at the beginning and end of the charging process. This calculator also considers different types of charging stations, including public charging stations and Leviton EV chargers.

Can I set my electric car’s maximum charge to 85%?
You can use a common profile. Also use in combination with a timer to control the period in which you want to charge the electric car and set it to 85%.
My Porsche Taycan charges to 100%, even though the timers are set at 80%.
Your Porsche Taycan will charge up to 80%, but once you plug your PMCC into the car, it will conflict with various timers.
“Server certificate expired or invalid” error occurs when connecting the Porsche wall charger.
You can create an additional Porsche Connect ID, and then use the ID to bind your EVSE
Porsche Taycan is not charging to maximum. It used to charge to about 280 miles when charged to 100%. Now the Taycan only charges to 240 miles.
The number you are referring to is simply an estimate of the range you will get for a given charge level, and it is affected by many factors including cold weather. You can also read about the impact of weather on charging an electric car on this site.
Taycan will shut down even if Taycan is connected to your EVSE and not turned on.
12V is supplied only when the car is on.
This is in case you forget to turn the car off.
The charging contract expires in July 2022. Does anyone know if this will automatically renew or do I need to contact customer service?
The contract will renew itself for next year
I have a Porsche account with my AmEx card.
And for some reason it doesn’t work, Is the Credit Card the cause of my Plug & Charge problems?
You need to set up an account in EA as well as in porsche via the my porsche app.
The Taycan app reports a charging error, that the circuit breaker is broken. I reinstalled the app back and now the machine is only consuming 6A of the 40A.
What is the problem, the charger or the car? I tried plugging in a 120v plug, but it consumes zero amps.
If the car charges normally from another charger, it’s the PMCC or its wiring. If PMCC gives an error, something has gone wrong.
Is the Porsche Mobile Charger Plus better or worse than the 32 amp Mustart EV charger?
I have a 50 amp line at home for charging.
The 40 amp EV charger versus Mustart’s 32 amp charger. The Porsche Mobile Charger Plus will be slightly faster than the Mustart charger.
I mostly use a 20/22kWh charger, is that bad for the battery?
No, not bad in and of itself.
To increase the life of the 20kW on-board charger, it is recommended to limit the maximum power to 25A when charging.
Why do I need a 22 kW AC onboard charger?
I don’t see the point in using a 22kW standard AC home EV charger and a mobile charger because they would draw too many amps…
Try setting the charging timer at a time other than when you normally use a lot of electricity. Set the charger to 50%.
Normally this should be enough to profitably charge the Taycan.
Ionity Charging – how to use the Porsche Card correctly and why doesn’t it work?
This is usually an Ionity problem, not a card problem.
Use the Porsche Charging Service app to activate the charger.
What are the benefits of using Mobile Charger Connect?
Can the basic charger that comes standard with the car charge at the 22 kWh rate?
Advantages: there is a touch screen and WIFI.
The standard Porsche Mobile Charger Plus has a maximum power output of 9.6 kW.
You have the option of using a 22 kW on-board charger, you can take full advantage.
Is it possible to charge to 100%?
You can charge up to 100%, as long as the car is not running at 100% for an extended period of time. But allowing the car to stay below 25% SOC for extended periods of time is also bad for the battery.
I’ve noticed that my Taycan shuts down, at regular intervals, when it does timed charging. Has anyone had this happen?
This may be normal as your car’s maximum charge (60%) is very low. This may mean that the car has decided that it can charge whenever it wants, rather than all the time, as the Taycan would like to finish charging by 07:00.
“charging error”
Most likely:
1. the Porsche charger is bad
2. bad charger on your car
3. bad electrical circuit NEMA 14-50
To diagnose this, you need to use a different charger – or connect the charger to a different plug. Or take your electric vehicle and charger to your Porsche dealer for diagnosis.
The Taycan continues to charge to 100%. Charging starts at the programmed time. What am I doing wrong?
The Taycan will charge as soon as you plug it in and allow it to charge.
After that, the Taycan continues to charge if there is no timer.
On Electrify America stations, the plug was getting stuck. When I pressed the “stop charging” button nothing happened. Am I doing something wrong?
The surest way to release the cord is to use PCM | Charging … | unlock the charging cord. It always helps.
240 volt 50 amp line. I have a red light on all the time while charging a Porsche Taycan.
Try resetting the EVSE when the red light comes on. After that the charging usually works fine, it is some kind of problem with EVSE.
I advise you to check the grounding.
I have a second home and don’t want to buy a second charging station, I need a 25 foot cord that connects my 240V line to my car.
There are many third-party portable EV charger options available. You don’t have to buy from Porse, you can find them in stores.
Porsche Wall Charger Connect, how many kWh will it put out at 48 amps?
I could not find this information in the manual.
240 volts * 48 amps = 11 kW
It takes approximately 84 kWh to charge a Taycan.
84 kWh (battery capacity) / 11 kW = 7.6 hours to fully charge from 0% to 100%
Charging session error on Electrify America
The electric vehicle charger button light changes from white to red and the EA Station displays an error code: VEHICLE_PROXCAN_TIMEOUT
After disconnecting Plug and Charge in the car, the station prompted me to return to the “default” state. When the charging station indicated that the plugs were ready for use, I plugged them in manually and waited for the “Welcome, Guest” message to appear. I then initiated a charging session from the Charging NA app, and that helped.
The air conditioning works ONLY if I put the car in RANGE mode… is this really the only way of air conditioning?
Connect the EA station through the PCM and the air conditioning will start pre-conditioning regardless of the mode.
The new Taycan is not charging from the newly installed home charger. The app says “Initializing” and the touchscreen shows loading. Then a charging error appears. After that, the plug turns red.
Try checking the Porsche charger to see if it works.
If it works, the problem is probably in your home EVSE.
Sometimes resetting the charger helps.
When I charge the Taycan, can I change the charging current [A] manually like a Tesla?
No one Porsche offers such a way – if you can’t control it on the EVSE, you’re out of luck…
Why is it that when the car is plugged into the charger, fully charged and able to draw power from the internal mains, the PCM will not run longer than 15 minutes?
I set the charge limit at 85%, but when I got back to my car, the battery was at 88%… Is something wrong?
The CCS charger is almost always DC, and with DC there is no way to limit the charge.
What is the best way to charge the battery to extend battery life?
Do not charge the battery to maximum, but only to 80% unless you are going on a long trip.
Porse say “Taycan customers will get three years of unlimited 30-minute charging at Electrify America locations,” but what exactly does that mean? Can I start another session after 30 minutes?
You get 30 minutes for free, and yes, you will be charged after 30 minutes.
You can also interrupt your session for up to 30 minutes and then start another free charging session!
How to set the profile correctly in the app to charge only up to 85%
There is a way to specify a maximum of 85% – it is to use a timer – set there profile for each day and select the time.
