Level 1 vs Level 2 EV Charging Stations

Lectron’s charging stations are available in 120 volts and 240 volts. Lectron portable chargers may be plugged into outlets of different voltages, but they are most popular in the US market2: NEMA 5-15, 6-20, 10-30, 14-50. The Lectron Level-2 (40A) ev charging station can be inserted into a NEMA 6-50/14-50 Plug.

EV chargers use a higher-output 240-volt power source3, like the one that you plug your oven or clothes dryer into. Charging times are much faster than standard 120V household outlets.

EV charging stations require different volts to charge your car efficiently and quickly. There are 4 levels of charging stations.

  • Level 1 Lectron Charger: Normal 120V outlets, receives 11 miles per hour of charge.
  • Level 2 Lectron Charging Station: 240V outlet similar to a clothes dryer or oven, receives 22 miles per hour of charge. This is the type of EV charger you will want if you do not have a garage or cannot otherwise obtain a Level 2 charging station.
  • DC Fast Charging Station: 480V three phase AC input, receives 75 miles per hour of charge. These are often found at public locations such as gas stations and grocery stores.

– Tesla Supercharger Station: A proprietary connector used only by the Tesla Model S sedan (more on this later). Receives 120-400 miles per hour of charge.

As you can see above, a Level 1 Lectron charging station is fairly slow compared to others. It is best suited for overnight charging. A Level 2 Lectron charging station allows you to completely recharge your battery in a few hours, and a DC Fast Charging Station lets you recharge 80% of your battery in under an hour. The best option for most people would be a Level 2 charging station so you can fully charge your car in a few hours. However, the most common type of EV charger is used by Tesla vehicles which use a proprietary connector – so unless you have a Tesla this post probably isn’t very relevant to you.

The Lectron adapters are one of our product lines

On the American market, Tesla and non-Tesla vehicles have a variety of connection options. Adapters are used to charge various charging stations. Lectron is an electric car adapter manufacturer. There are 4 types of adapters, depending on the direction. The 3 types the company sells today are J1772 to Tesla Adapter, Tesla to J1772 Adapter and CCS1 to Tesla Adapter.

Lectron J1772 to Tesla charging adapter

Every Tesla automobile comes with this adapter, which is accessible in the trunk as well as the Tesla Mobile Connector.

It appears to be constructed of high-quality materials and looks well. Between the connector and cable, the Tesla side of the connection is a bit loose, but there have been no issues thus far. The adapter is made of heavy-duty materials and should endure a long time.

To connect the Tesla charger to the cord, press down on the locking tab, which might be easier if the cord could simply slide into place and lock without further effort. It’s also necessary to use a little more force when unplugging it. It is less expensive to utilize the adapter than to purchase a separate high-powered charger, and it’s not that inconvenient. Also allows for charging at hotels and resorts if desired.
