Among the chargers that you can carry in the trunk, the Mustart was a great fit for me. I've had experience with Chevy proprietary chargers, and I have a lot to compare them to. The Mustart is solidly built and is detected by my Bolt almost immediately after I turn it on.

  2. Rodney year ago

This product exceeded all my expectations. The quality of the material is great and the construction is solid. The charging speed as described.

EV Adept's review of Mustart 1450

The device itself out of the box is ready to use and does not require any professional competence. It comes with a fairly simple manual. The delivery set is supplemented by a holster dock, hook and other small items for installation.

MUSTART Level 2 Portable Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger (240 Volt, 25ft Cable, 40 Amp) NEMA 14-50 Plug, Plug-in EV Charging Station, Update Version

Portable and compact

The MUSTART EV Charger is lightweight and compact, making it perfect for taking on the go. It fits easily into the trunk of your car, so you don't have to worry about lugging a bulky charging station around. EV adept team finds the advantage in the fact that this compact device delivers a similar 9.6kW of power as the bulky and expensive station.

Maximum power for plug-in connection

The MUSTART Level-2 Portable EV Charger offers convenient plug-and-play setup. You can easily plug it into the NEMA 14-50 wall outlet and begin charging right away. The device draws the maximum possible power from the plug-in connection. So if you're considering a portable charger, this is the one with the maximum possible output of 40A. Compared to more powerful chargers.

MUSTART Real-Life Test

MUSTART Level 2 Portable Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger (240 Volt, 25ft Cable, 40 Amp) NEMA 14-50 Plug, Plug-in EV Charging Station, Update Version

EV adept team tested the efficiency of the charging process at Chevy Bolt, where the MUSTART can deliver up to 34 miles of range per hour (MPH). The car received a response from the charger the first time it was connected in less than 12 seconds, which is average. The interaction between the electric car and the device in terms of power limits performed satisfactorily. The cable is stiff, hard to bend, and heavier compared to the 32A models, but this indicates proper use of the AWG and is not a drawback. There was no significant heating of the cable during the 5 hours of charging, which confirms the quality of the cable. Overheating of the J-connector pins was detected and this is a bit worrisome as it can damage the inlet EV if it starts to overheat and there are no temperature sensors in it. The device itself is protected from overheating because the control box has built-in protection.

Compatible

The MUSTART Level-2 Portable EV Charger is compatible with most major EV makers, so you can be sure it will work with your vehicle in Canada or the US. The charger works properly with Tesla vehicles through the OEM J1772-to-NACS adapter. From the EV adept team's experience, the device has been tested on Tesla M3, VW ID.4, BMW i4, and Kia EV6. The response delay of the first connection is longer with the Tesla, but this does not affect the overall result.

This model has been popular with various manufacturers since many have refused to ship OEM chargers with the new electric car. Thanks to its inexpensive price, popular 14-50 socket and 40 Amp power, the MUSTART 40 ranks at the top of sales in the low-cost EVSE equipment segment.

Weatherproof

The MUSTART Level-2 Charger is designed to be weatherproof. It has the IP67 rate for the connector, and IP65 for the main box. On the other hand, in the absence of certification of the device, the EV adept team will not recommend its outdoors use.

Warranty and support

The warranty is provided by the manufacturer for 2 years, and can be extended free of charge for EV adept customers up to 3 years on the wiring when ordering the company's service. There was no reason to contact the manufacturer, when testing the charger, but it is a company without clear coordinates of the legal entity.

Pros and Cons of the MUSTART 40

Con #1 Chinese device without certification

Con #2 Rare heating of the J1772 connector

Pro #1 The lightness and compactness of the device

Pro #2 Affordable price

If you want to save money and your electric car doesn't consume more than 9.6kW, the MUSTART 40 is a very economical option, before it goes up in price. If you want a more reliable device from an American manufacturer, consider this station.
