The experts at Ideanomics’ WAVE division have introduced a game-changing 500kW wireless charging system that promises to keep electric trucks operational even in the most bitter cold conditions. WAVE’s cutting-edge technology employs a unique charging mechanism, involving a “plate” embedded beneath the road’s surface. This plate collaborates with a counterpart on the vehicle’s underside, enabling the transfer of electric current to the vehicle’s battery through induction. This approach is not only efficient but also eliminates the need for physical cable connections, a significant advantage in icy and snowy conditions.
Emission Reduction at Major Ports: A number of these inductive charging plates are already operational at strategic locations, including the Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles. Despite the success in temperate climates, questions remained about the system’s performance in extreme winter conditions. These concerns are being addressed head-on with a new installation at a Venture Logistics facility in the Midwest. Backed by an $8.4 million grant from the US Department of Energy, this project aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of the 500kW WAVE wireless charger under challenging, low-negative temperatures.
“Our demonstration project with Venture Logistics will show that for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles that demand perpetual operations and require charging infrastructure, wireless charging is the most effective solution at scale,” – Robin Mackie, COO of Ideanomics.
Upon completion, the WAVE 500kW charging system will power two of Venture’s Class 8 electric semi-trucks, showcasing the system’s capability to enhance zero-emission operations in cold climates. The technology is designed to specifically address the challenges posed by ice and snow, promoting safer and more efficient operations.
A particularly intriguing aspect of this technology is its potential to resolve certain union-related issues. For example, union contracts at ports may prevent workers from manually plugging in electric trucks. The wireless charging pads, which can be embedded in parking spots or used while trucks queue, offer a seamless solution to this problem.
